IC on Broadway event to shine the spotlight on the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

From November 10-12, 2022, Ithaca College will be hosting a weekend-long “IC in the City” experience in New York City for alumni and current students, faculty, and staff.  The centerpiece of this event, the 63rd annual Cortaca Jug football game between Ithaca College and SUNY Cortland, will take place on November 12 at Yankee Stadium. To highlight this amazing opportunity, we will be publishing a yearlong series titled “Countdown to Cortaca: Bombers in the Bronx,” highlighting the entire weekend.

Alumni stars of the stage will join with some 50 current students from the Ithaca College School of Music, Theatre, and Dance on Friday, November 11, for a historic performance in the appropriately named Broadway Ballroom at the Marriott Marquis in New York City’s Time Square.

“What we’re trying to showcase is the collaboration of music, theatre, and dance. We really want to highlight the cross-discipline, collaborative nature of what the school has done in the past and what we want to do in the future.”

Steve TenEyck, associate dean in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance

Titled “IC on Broadway: South Hill State of Mind,” the 8 p.m. show will feature vocalists, monologues, solo guitar and jazz band performances, as well as a music and dance composition collaboration.

The full list of alumni performers is Q. Smith ’00, Eric Jordan Young ’93, Jim Hynes ’78, Grant Carey ’13, Colin Fin ’21, Justin Albinder ’18. Ezgi Irmakkesen ’21. and Eunice Akinola ’17.

Additional information about each of these talented alumni can be found here.

This entertainment is only part of the festivities. The African Drumming and Dance Ensemble will open the show with a performance, followed by remarks from President La Jerne Terry Cornish and dean of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance Anne Hogan.

“My hope is that everyone who sees this feels a connection to IC, and this event brings a lot of goodwill. We have a lot of enthusiasm and excitement, and we hope this event will build on that.”

Jim Hynes '78 Performing

Trumpeter Jim Hynes '78 is looking forward to connecting with his fellow alumni as well as current students.

The breadth of the show is one of its highlights.

“This event will be a fantastic opportunity to showcase the artistic breadth and range of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance community,” Hogan said. “I’m delighted that our students will experience the thrill of performing on Broadway, and that they will do so in the company of some of our most acclaimed alumni. It’s going to be quite a sparkly and inspiring evening, I feel sure!”

Trumpeter Jim Hynes ’78, whose performing credits range from Broadway’s “Cats” to the distinctive instrumental theme music for “NBC Sunday Night Football,” will be performing with the Jazz Band, and he’s looking forward to the event.

“This is an opportunity to connect with the students and that’s important to me,” he said. “When I was a student, I got to intersect with a pro, and that time was such an amazing real-world experience.

“I’m also very excited to get together with my fellow alumni and share what we’ve undergone since we left college,” he added.

The event will be a perfect opportunity for the school to showcase both the past and the future.

“My hope is that everyone who sees this feels a connection to IC, and this event brings a lot of goodwill,” said associate dean Ivy Walz. “We have a lot of enthusiasm and excitement, and we hope this event will build on that.”

“To do something like this, it says to me that we’re forward thinking,” said Hynes. “I think it’s really going to be a seminal moment for everyone to take in.
